Our Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion Globally
Diversity and inclusion aren't just the right things to do -- they are also the right things to do for our business. We view diversity and inclusion as keys to our future. Our brands appeal to a diverse array of customers and consumers globally, and they are sold by an equally diverse group of retailers.
To understand the needs of our customers, consumers and communities, build a top-quality workforce and succeed in the marketplace, PepsiCo must be a truly global, multi-cultural and multi-generational organization. Our commitment to reflect the local communities we serve is an essential aspect of Talent Sustainability at PepsiCo, and "winning with diversity and inclusion" is part of our values and philosophy.
Associates and Careers
More than 70 years ago, PepsiCo was one of the first major companies to hire minorities in professional positions. We were the first major company to have a woman on our Board of Directors, and we were the first Fortune 500 company to have an African-American vice president.
PepsiCo continues to build on this heritage of leadership in diversity and inclusion. In 2009, we were recognized as a top company for D & I by:
DiversityInc: Top 50 Companies;
Latina Style: Top 50 Companies;
Working Mother: 20 Best Companies for Multi-Cultural Women;
The Times (London): Top 50 Places Where Women Want to Work: UK and Ireland;
CFR Institute: Recognition for Promoting Equal Opportunities in the Workplace: Spain; and
Forbes: #1 Company Where Women Can Get Promoted the Fastest: Turkey.
Our continued focus on diversity and inclusion includes:
dedicated executives for managing diversity and inclusion within our operating divisions;
external Advisory Boards consisting of educators, government officials, nonprofit leaders and customers to advise PepsiCo on a variety of issues relating to diversity and inclusion;
Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and networks that empower and provide support to our associates to drive change and create opportunities for professional and personal growth;
annual employee performance reviews for all managers on people results that incorporate inclusion-related goals;
mandatory annual Affirmative Action planning processes;
a bi-annual organizational health survey of all associates that measures organizational and managerial support of diversity and inclusion;
corporate-sponsored training programs for associates at all levels to promote Inclusion across the organization globally;
the Harvey C. Russell Awards, recognizing employees globally for outstanding achievement in promoting diversity and inclusion within PepsiCo and in the local communities we serve around the world; and
the Steve Reinemund Global Diversity and Inclusion Leadership Legacy Award, presented to senior leaders for outstanding leadership in advancing diversity and inclusion within PepsiCo and in the local communities we serve.
Customers
Early in its history – as far back as the 1940s – PepsiCo was the first major company to grant a franchise to people of color. We were also the first major company to engage in multicultural marketing.
Brand Pepsi pioneered marketing and national lifestyle advertising designed to serve minority communities. Groundbreaking initiatives have included music, education and sports programs.
Today, we continue our leadership in reaching out to shoppers and consumers worldwide through inclusive programs such as the Pepsi Refresh Project, in which brand Pepsi is giving away millions each month to fund refreshing ideas that change the world – with the public deciding which ideas receive grants.
Suppliers
We are committed to purchasing quality products and services from a diverse supplier base. In 2006, we surpassed $1 billion in spending with minority and women vendors, and, in 2009, PepsiCo spending with minority- and women-owned vendors reached almost $1.3 billion.
Community
We support diversity and inclusion in local communities around the world through our corporate giving and community programs. Giving is done through the PepsiCo Foundation, Corporate Contributions and PepsiCo divisions. Recipients include global and local organizations that champion and promote diversity and inclusion.
The PepsiCo Foundation also matches eligible associate charitable contributions globally, dollar for dollar. And PepsiCo supports community organizations globally through in-kind support such as donations of products, premiums, printing, event services and equipment.
We also support local communities by supporting volunteer efforts of our employees. For example, in 2010, Mosaic – an Employee Resource Group for African-American employees – led a day of employee volunteerism across the U.S. to support Feeding America, the leading U.S. domestic hunger-relief charity. Some 1,400 PepsiCo associates participated in more than 30 locations. Watch a video about PepsiCo Feeds America.
