At PepsiCo, we are committed to minimizing the impact our business has on the environment with methods that are socially responsible, scientifically based and economically sound. We continuously improve our environmental programs and explore inventive solutions to the world's challenges. We operate in a way that minimizes our environmental footprint with the goal of reaching a net-neutral impact. Our goal is to reduce water consumption by 20 percent, reduce electricity consumption 20 percent, and reduce fuels consumption by 25 percent per unit of production by 2015 as compared to our 2006 consumption. In 2008, we conserved more than 7.5 billion liters of water, versus 2006, as a result of gains in water efficiency. But that's just a drop in the ocean compared to the other things that we're doing. In India, for example, where agriculture accounts for over 80 percent of total fresh water consumption, PepsiCo is working with farmers to reduce water intensity in paddy cultivation by around 30 percent through a technique that avoids the traditional flood irrigation methods.
Let's Talk Water
More than 1 billion people do not have access to safe drinking water. The PepsiCo Foundation is committed to developing sustainable partnerships and programs in underserved regions that provide opportunities for improved health, environment and inclusion. Among the programs is Safe Water Network, which serves as a catalyst for the development, optimization and validation of demand-driven, sustainable, water solutions that have potential to meet the needs to the world's poor at scale.
A Smaller Carbon Footprint
The Eco-Fina Bottle is the latest evolution of Aquafina's ongoing efforts, which began in 2002, to develop the lightest and one of the most environmentally-friendly bottles in the market. Naked Juice recently released its reNEWabottleTM, which is made of 100% post-consumer plastic, and has a goal of transitioning its entire product line to 100% post-consumer recycled bottles in 2010. Also by Earth Day 2010, we're proud to announce that SunChips® snacks will be available in the first ever 100% compostable chip bag of its kind.
Thinking of the Planet
Strengthening its commitment to the environment; Tropicana® Pure Premium recently became the first consumer brand in North America to certify its carbon footprint in partnership with the Carbon Trust. In 2008 our Frito-Lay plant in Modesto, California unveiled a solar concentrator field designed to drive the production of truly "solar powered" SunChips. The solar energy captured by the 192 solar collectors produces steam that generates nearly three quarters of the heat used in the SunChips manufacturing process.
Other Sustainability Initiatives
We have in place a global eco-efficiency strategy for resource conservation (RECON) within our operations that helps us optimize our water, energy and electricity use through improved methods and technologies. In 2007, PepsiCo agreed on rigorous, corporation-wide global metrics to help us better track and understand our environmental footprint. Here are just some of the additional steps that PepsiCo is taking to create a better tomorrow, today.
